The challenge was like nothing Lance Walker had encountered in his career. The sports performance specialist has prepared football players to bull rush in the NFL, rugby players who had the strength of a bull, and even a Chicago Bulls hopeful but in November, 2013 he tackled the challenge of training professional bull riders.

Walker, the Performance Director at Michael Johnson Performance, immersed himself in video tape study, spoke to riders and developed ideas for training professional bull riders that utilized Keiser’s pneumatic resistance equipment.

Competitors on the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series Jory Markiss, Matt Triplett, Pistol Robinson, Douglas Duncan, Harve Stewart, Jaret Craig and Marcus Mariluch made regular treks three days a week during the winter to Michael Johnson Performance in the Dallas suburb of McKinney, Texas. Initial performance evaluations gave way to one-one-one consultations then sports science tailored programs were developed for each.

The Keiser Functional Trainer was used to build “a rotary core of strength,” Walker explained. The Keiser Air 300 squat is another staple of the bull riders’ program. “It’s a lot different from the working out that I’ve been doing and done in the past,” said Stewart.

Piston Robinson has said that his training at Michael Johnson Performance has sent his confidence “through the roof!” He told, “This isn’t training. This is sports science.”

Matt Triplett was equally impressed with the results of his winter regimen. “Everything I’ve gotten out of that program has been awesome.”
